Seems like our BlogAdmin has been provoking some stimulating feedback recently on Twitter!

Well, he’s gone off on his jolly’s for a couple of weeks, leaving the helm with us instead!

We here at IntegratedCCTV simply want to use this Blog as a sounding board for our OPINIONS regarding the state and position of our industry – sure, as has been levelled at us, we are UK based, we may not be the most advanced country in the World for adopting the latest and greatest technology, but this does not mean we do not have an opinion to offer.

Every country region has its own level of expertise and product take up – this happens in any industry with any technology.

We, as UK residents, have been accused of lagging behind in IP take-up – this is not without foundation and probably quite true. I wouldn’t say that its not without trying, but when a professional installation industry is hell bent on sticking to copper, then IP is always going to be the domain of the IT industry to  move into the Security industry for the technology to gain traction.

Whilst talking about ‘lagging’ behind, we should really exploit our considerably better nationwide ADSL/Cable infrastructure to improve our IP CCTV market – countries like the US are actually lagging behind us with slower and more expensive internet connections, yet their IP take-up is higher than ours.

Perhaps countries like the US are simply able to adopt what’s new and interesting better than we can? Maybe we in the UK hang on until something has been tried, tested and actually reliable?

And, on the subject of feedback, it would appear that we are also criticised about our presentation and grammar here on IntegratedCCTV. For my part, I cannot see the relevance or importance of this within an informal blog – the purpose being to lay down our thoughts and yes, our musings. Whilst some may think we are some form of  ‘authoritative voice’ we are not, we are merely looking to impart thought and word. Unlike many, we do not charge for the information we like to bring and long may that continue.

So, whilst we appreciate criticism, it should be constructive and polite – you know the saying, if you can do better………..

HDCCTV allianceAs far back as 2003 commentators have been asking the question whether IP CCTV will be the domain of security installers or IT integrators. The question has dragged on and to their credit security installers have been fighting hard to maintain their market share of newly installed IP CCTV systems. The biggest problem they face is that the decision making process as to who decides to install an IP surveillance system has shifted very much into the hands of the IT director. This is because anything that runs on a company network almost always gets thrust into the hands of the IT department. They protect their network with a passion and will not let anyone touch it who does not have a prestigious background in IT . This has meant that security installers inexperienced in the ways of IP have been struggling to talk to the IT departments of big companies on their level. The result, the IT director would almost always prefer to talk to IT integrators and so the business slips away.

Now however we have HD SDI CCTV cameras and HD SDI DVR’s. This suddenly tips the scales back in the favour of the security installer. He suddenly finds that he can provide HD solutions with quality images to his customers and the technology is just simple plug and play.

The  most important factor though in this whole battle is the security installers database. This database is full of customers many naive to the benefits of IP CCTV or HD CCTV who already have analogue CCTV installed. So what is the security installer sales department going to sell when it comes to the time to upgrade? Well it seems obvious he will push the customer in the direction of HD CCTV . No IT departments to deal with , no laptops to provide , no software to worry about , no extra training.  Best of all HD images with no compression or latency. In the UK we have hundreds of thousands of CCTV systems in desperate need of upgrade and IP CCTV is quite simply not an option for the vast majority of these. HD CCTV is about to come of age and the market place is primed and ready for it .

Firstly i apologise this post is not about CCTV. This is a bit of a rant about the new merger between Orange and T-Mobile. Now i have used Orange for as long as I can remember and i have to say i have always been impressed with the coverage they have on their network. Apart from the odd spot (and you learn where these are over time)  the coverage was always good. This is very important when you do a lot of travelling and need to talk while on the move. I remember that i used to be able to talk to fellow orange users for ages as i drove along without the service dropping out. This meant business was easy to organise and no shouting “are you still there ? can you here me? you’re breaking up !!!!!!!!!!!!! it just did not seem to happen.

mobile phone service
Are we going backwards??

Now however something has changed, trying to make a call on the move is near impossible if you are lucky enough to connect then the service drops out within seconds, it is hopeless. Now I don’t know for sure whether this is because Orange have merged with T-mobile or what …but i never asked for this and i want my “service” back. This maybe a blip, it may be me getting paranoid! Not sure, but something has changed..hey if anyone else out there is experiencing the same thing let us know, we do understand CCTV here but we cant understand this sudden change in our Mobile phone service!!!

Integrated CCTV recently had the opportunity to interview Rick Ramsey the product manager for Avigilon. Avigilon’s appearance at IFSEC last year, the UK’s number 1 CCTV exhibition raised their profile dramatically. We asked Rick about Avigilon and their thoughts and ideas for the future. Rick was also able to give us some great insight into the CCTV products that Avigilon produce. The quality of the Megapixel and HD camera available is exceptional and the 16 megapixel camera is unique in the market place.
