Panasonic have announced that have introduced their latest HD PTZ dome to the i-Pro range. The WV-SW396 is best suited for environments that require an HD PTZ dome solution for a harsh operating situation. Panasonic have suggested logistical operations or City centre schemes would find the WV-SW396 an enhancement or direct replacement for existing camera installations. The WV-SW396 has a 36x optical zoom and a 12x digital zoom. With an extra 72x extra optical zoom under VGA resolution. This camera really pushes the boundaries.
The WV-SW396 camera also boast a sequenced alarm feature for advanced tracking and is IP66 rated, able to withstand temperature differentials of between -50 degrees C to + 50 degrees C . True day night and colour mode down to 0.5 LUX means grainy pictures are a thing of the past. The WV-SW396 is fully ONVIF compliant and includes automatic device discovery, video streaming and intelligence metadata.
Image quality, how important will this be in 2012?
We have said for a long time here at integrated CCTV that image quality and HD in particular will be the most important selling point for CCTV in the coming years. 2012 though will be a particularly important year for HD and how better picture quality will be implemented into CCTV systems. In particular anyone upgrading this year will be looking for exceptional value for money, HD and megapixel can certainly offer this. It is with interest then that we read the findings of the recent IMS white paper and view with interest that they see re-focusing on image quality as very important in 2012. Below we look at what they say on the subject.
IMS focus on image quality.
The IMS forecasts that by 2015 more than 70% of all network cameras will be of a megapixel resolution. Perhaps the most important thing though is that most industry professionals are suggesting that HD quality will be enough. This is probably linked to the public’s knowledge of HD and how they perceive HD picture quality. Of course there will always be a requirement in certain situations for more pixels and Avigilon have proved this with their 16 megapixel HD Pro camera, however we believe that for mainstream CCTV systems the desire for HD quality will suffice.
Avigilon CCTV
As the IMS have identified and something in the industry we all know is that end users want two things above all else. 1) to be able to read a number plate and 2) be able to recognise a face. Almost every break in I have attended has always culminated in the complaint that “they can’t read the number plate or see the face so what use is this CCTV system to me” ???..Of course they are right, CCTV has been repeatedly mis-sold over a number of years sometimes innocently of course sometimes with less care. However it does a job and does prevent crime, its just with HD technology now on the market it will actually do an excellent job.
Lighting and HD CCTV
With HD though comes lighting issues when used outside, LED lighting manufacturers could find that as CCTV needs higher definition then their sales will increase accordingly. Raytec have the market share at present but watch out for some excellent development in lighting from some less well known names. Efficient, directional and atheistic lighting solutions will benefit from the rise in sales of HD CCTV solutions.
Will HD be delivered over cat5 or coax?
Finally of course there is a raging argument at present as to whether HD CCTV will be delivered via an IP solution or HDcctv solution. The difference for those still in the dark is IP solutions are pure IP over cat5 where as HDcctv is delivered over coax i.e. point to point.
HD using IP is well established and there is no reason to see this decline especially with new build projects. However there are certain market places that will seriously benefit from HDcctv over coax. A combination of recession, a mature market bordering on saturation, may help HDcctv over coax take the lions share of HD upgrades in the UK. That assumes of course that manufacturers really think there is mileage in this. This will be proven if we see some of the main players producing HDcctv products in the next 12 months.
The final barrier to HD is storage requirements. The floods in Thailand will set back many hoping to introduce HD in early 2012 as they will have seen storage costs soaring, a shame, however this will not be long term, whatever happens it will be an interesting year for anyone involved in HD CCTV solutions
Selling CCTV in the UK today is interesting to say the least. We have options available today that allow us to integrate all sorts of solutions together. So its with interest that we read the comments of Barry Shakespeare in this months copy of Security matters. In the November edition Barry looks towards the future and predicts what Norbain see as the way forward and talks about how they are preparing for changing times ahead.
Norbain see IP as the way forward
It is well known that Mr Shakespeare has come from a IP background and it is perfectly understandable that he backs IP as the way forward. His beliefs are of course backed up by all the big manufacturers who themselves have committed to IP as the future upgrade path for both IP video and integrated security solutions.
Last week Norbain held a seminar where they were able to talk about the benefits of IP and allow their industry partners to demonstrate their wares to installers and integrators alike. IP was the strong theme and during the course of the presentation Barry predicted that IP would reach tipping point at sometime around the end of 2013. Now we have heard this before and there is no doubt more and more end users are becoming aware that when the time comes for upgrade then IP is probably the way to go.
Installers struggle with IP ?
The same however cannot be said about those installing CCTV solutions. It was surprising that so many of the invited delegates did not install IP as their first preference and many had suffered some pretty bad experiences when trying to “get with the times”. The launch of Norbain’s own IP centre of excellence to train their staff can only help those troubled installers who seem to struggle to move on. Also other concepts that Norbain are introducing such as innovation centres and services that include pre-tested and configured IP CCTV systems will certainly encourage sales.
HDcctv makes a quiet appearance .
Perhaps though the most interesting thing that was not really touched upon was HDcctv and the opportunity to installers that this offered. Only quietly promoted were the new offerings of HDcctv DVR’s from both Samsung and Vista / Norbain themselves that allows HD over coax. It is our belief that HD will drive sales not IP. Until now IP has been the only way deliver HD to end users so its no surprise that IP has been hailed as the future. Remember however, the UK is a mature market place. Many millions of pounds have been invested in a coaxial infrastructure, why throw this investment away. Realistically recession is round the corner, just when we thought we were out of the woods. New system sales will be hard to come by so the salesman that can demonstrate improved quality and performance (HD) over an existing network has to have the commercial advantage when selling CCTV solutions in the coming months and years.
2013
We don’t see 2013 as the tipping point to IP. We don’t see 2013 as the end of analogue CCTV. We see 2013 as the tipping point to HD CCTV and the only question is how will that be delivered into the UK CCTV market place. Will it be HD over IP or will it be HD over coax? Answer that question and that will be where the real money will be made installing CCTV over the next 5 years.
Back in January we published an article about some of the technologies and changes we thought mat effect the CCTV industry. Check out the blog and see if you think any of our predictions have come true. We will be doing the same for Jan 2012. If you sell innovative CCTV equipment that you think will Make a difference to CCTV systems in 2012 then let us know and we will publish your thoughts and comments as well as details about your CCTV products.
So will it be the white light Predator camera or perhaps the Everfocus HDcctv DVR or even any HD SDI DVR products and solutions that will be released in 2012?
Will the shortage of hard drives effect CCTV in 2012. There is a school of thought that think it may have a more profounf effect than we currently realize.
